Bedding it the first layer of cement/mortar which acts a bed for the ridge capping to sit on. Once set, a flexible cement compound is applied over the bedding and onto the collars of the ridge caps, providing an extra layer of protection and ensuring the roof is safe from potential leaks.
The ridge caps play a significant role in the function of your roof; therefore, it is important to ensure they are in good condition. Cracks and holes can form overtime causing the ridge capping to become loose, due to being exposed to the elements. This can cause the roof cavity to become exposed and cause leaks.
A full re-bed consists of the ridge caps being removed, along with the old mortar. A new bed of mortar is laid using a bedding rack as a guide, followed by re-laying the ridge caps. Once the bedding has set, they are ready for pointing.
Sometimes, a full re-bed is not necessary, as the bedding is in fair condition with minor cracks only. In this case, the existing bedding is good enough to be re-pointed
